Move the Election?

Filed under: Politics by Chad at 6:02 pm UTC

According to a recent Newsweek article, the Department of Homeland Security is currently reviewing a plan that would postpone this year’s election in the event of a terrorist attack to try to alter our election process like they did so well in Spain of this year. While the planning by the Department of Homeland Security is good, why are they making this public? Isn’t this admitting to terrorist networks that such an attack would indeed postpone our democratic process?

This disturbs me in a number of ways. First, it has been widely said by the Bush Administration as well as scholars, terrorism analysts and even the Liberal left that disrupting our election process is a priority for groups such as Al Queda and Hezbollah. Everyone in America and around the world should know this by now as it has been widely reported on in the past. Why acknowledge that the country is already making preparations to do exactly what these terrorists want? Does Tom Ridge really think that announcing to the world that we already have a step to move the elections if terrorists attack us are a good idea? This is telling these groups that they have already won with just a threat.

Secondly, what the world saw in Spain’s reaction to the train bombings in how they disturbed their elections wouldn’t happen in the United States. Al Queda chose to commit this atrocities just days before they election to try to get the “softer” candidate elected who promised to pull troops out of Iraq. The bombs went off and the same people that have enough courage to spend an entire month of each year putting themselves in harms way of raging bulls now cower behind the threat of faceless men and women who want to rule the world. The Spanish people are not cowards; they are not idiots; but what they did by swinging their vote is give the terrorists an alarming win and endanger millions of people in every democratic nation.

Thirdly, let’s look at what the terrorists hope to accomplish by disturbing our election process in terms of what happened in Spain. Al Queda hates Bush. Hezbollah hates Bush. Michael Moore hates Bush. France PM Chirac hates Bush. No, Moore and Chirac aren’t terrorists, but the same undeniable hate is present in both of them of not only Bush, but the American culture and way of life. I am not saying that these terrorist groups love John Kerry, but if it came down to it, I assure you that they would prefer Kerry to Bush. Just assume that a dirty bomb is set off in New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles a few days before the election. The terrorists assume, based on the history of Spain’s election, that the American people will give Bush the boot and elect Kerry in a landslide. What the terrorists don’t factor in is that if they were to strike in such a manor, or similar, the American people would re-elect George W. Bush to a second term in with no less than a 65% to 30% popular vote. Perhaps 5% of the people would vote for Nader or other candidates. This result would strengthen our resolve as a nation and the result that these terrorist groups wanted would not happen.

Along with the assumption that we are hit by terrorists, I can already hear the Kerry/Edwards campaign and other “leaders” of the Liberal left chastising the Bush Administration for not protecting the American people. The chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Terry McAuliffe, will be on CNN 24/7 to pronounce that the Bush Administration purposely delayed the elections to gain a few extra votes because Kerry was in the lead before the terrorist attack. Senator Ted “How am I still Elected?” Kennedy would sound off the Liberal alarm that Bush allowed the attack to happen. Senator Hillary “Tax rate of 60% is good” Clinton would call for the indictment of the people involved in the “vast right-winged conspiracy.” Michael Moore will move to France because he just can’t stand being American. Wait; maybe Moore moving isn’t such a bad thing.

Our next election in 2008 will have the Democratic nominees yelling and screeching at the top of their lungs that Bush not only stole the election in 2000, but also in 2004. “He collaborated with Al Queda and Hezbollah to win the 2004 election,” said Democratic Nominee Hilary Clinton.

What a fine mess we weave in today’s politics. All of this starts with the Department of Homeland Security to announce they are devising a plan to postpone the election process. Some things should just be on a need to know basis, and this is one of them.

UPDATE:According to Malia Rulon of the Associated Press, House Reps. have called for no delay of the elections in case of a terrorist attack.

A congressional resolution by Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Administration Committee, says “the actions of terrorists will never cause the date of any presidential election to be postponed” and “no single individual or agency should be given the authority to postpone the date of a presidential election.”
