Nicaragua is on alert after two suspected Al Qaida members were believed to be in Central America.
In a brief statement, Nicaragua’s Interior Ministry said one of those possibly in the region was Ahmed Salim Swedan, a Kenyan wanted for the U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa in 1998 that killed more than 200 people.

Nicaragua told its border officials “to maintain vigilance to guarantee our country does not become scene to the presence of elements linked to international terrorism,” the ministry said.
It did not say how the pair were detected or what they were suspected of doing in the region, home to the Panama Canal.
There have been recent grumblings, though there is nothing more to this to my knowledge, of the Panama Canal being a prime target for Al Qaida. In theory it would disrupt shipping throughout the world thus damaging many economies along the way.
Al Qaida has said they are pursuing ways to enter the United States from the South, which is yet one more reason to secure our borders.
