In one of the other conservative blogs that I read often, there was a quote from Hugo Chavez offering oil, water etc. It was noted that that might be a reaction to Pat Robertson's comment. Don't remember for sure, but think it was either M. H. King's blog or Booker Rising.

Chavez did a similar thing when the US was preparing to invade Afghanistan. He promised the US that his country would do what it could to ensure that the US had the oil it needed if there was a disruption. This is the guy that some want to kill.

This is a tragedy. Most likely one of the worst the world has witnessed. My heart goes out to all of those affected.

As for you post: I feel it's very unfair to compare the US to developing and impoverished countries. The US is a super-power, an industrialized country with far better economy. You have more resources than any other nation in the world to deal with this sort of situations.

So why should how much money other countries donate be so important? Why is this what counts for you?

FYI: the UN as well as countries all over the world are offering their assistance, but are being refused. A list of what the UN could offer was handed to your Governement less than 24 hours after the disaster. They have yet to get a reply....

While I certainly agree it may be a bit unfair to compare this hurricane to the tsunami for instance, this is also the most timely comparison.

What matters to me is that when anything goes on in the world, countries look to the United States for help. We see it from natural disasters to other incidents. We always step up and oblige. In our time of need, from what I've seen there has not been pledges but rather vague mentions of aid. If we had given just vague mentions of aid to the tsunami, which we did do for the first couple of days, we would have been lampooned as we were. Turn-about is fair play.

The contributions from some nations (Jamaica, Hondorus, Dominican Republic and El Salvador to name a few) is generous without question. All aid is generous though, and should be noted as such. It is not the need of the international community to reach out to nations hit by such a disaster, yet we have lived this way for decades. In my view, it's time for the international community to lay down their rhetoric and help out. Much like what Canada is doing and I personally thank them for that.

Secretary Condoleeza Rice said yesterday we would accept internation aid. As the situation on the ground is still being determined, I'm sure there will be aid coming. I hope so.

I am also trying to keep a list but I haven't been able to find amounts. I was blown away when I saw Sri Lanka. But even more glaring is who hasn't pledged help ... like oil rich Kuwait who certainly had no trouble taking our help to save their country from Saddam's army.

We have always been a nation willing to reach out and help any of our global neighbors when they needed something. Now when we have problems, it's just nice to look up and see helping hands offered to us. We may be able to get back up on our own. But it's always nice to know those neighborly hands are their if we need to grasp them.

Every offer of help is appreciated and should be acknowledged and applauded.

Could some things have been handled better? Yes. Could some things have been handled quicker? Yes. Will we learn from this? Yes Should individual States have acted quicker instead of waiting on the Federal Government? Yes. Nothing is ever perfect.

We are a nation that is pulling together, helping those who need help both here and abroad. We are survivors. We are free. Free to uplift our nation and free to make stupid comments (and boy have I heard some stupid comments this week from entertainers, politicians, etc.)

If you are a nation, or individual, or corporation that has offered your hand to us with any kind of help or prayers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

God bless you.
