‘Love me Tender’

Filed under: Uncategorized by Chad at 1:44 pm CDT

The visit of President Bush and Japan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to Graceland has become rather humorous after Koizumi sang ‘Love me Tender’ for the cameras.  Koizumi is an Elvis fan and reportedly had always wanted to visit Graceland.  Now he has.

On a bit of a side note, I seem to be good at those, I went to college at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX which is the home of Buddy Holly.  The city of Lubbock built a Buddy Holly Center and a Buddy Holly statue to commemorate the man who is arguably the city’s most famous past resident.  Holly even outshines Natalie Maines, though that’s hardly shocking considering Holly was rock and roll and Maines, at least at this stage in her career, isn’t near any hall of fame centers.

One of my good friends worked for the City of Lubbock and he told me something that I thought was just shocking.  Out of everyone who traveled to Lubbock to visit the Buddy Holly Center, where do you think the majority came from?  According to my friend, most visitors were from Eastern Europe.  Apparently Buddy Holly had, and may still have, quite a bit of fanfare in Eastern European countries such as Ukraine and Romania.

Why is it then that two of this nation’s greatest musicians are followed more outside of the United States than from within?  Or are they?
