On BBC’s ‘Newsnight’ program, a British official said five Iranians detained in Iraq in late December were senior intelligence officers, rather than members of the Revolutionary Guard as suggested by the leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NICR). However, the two aren’t mutually exclusive.
“There were five senior officers in various Iranian intelligence organizations,” the BBC’s Newsnight television program, broadcast late on Thursday, quoted the unnamed official as telling it.
“It was a very significant meeting. These people have been collared, relatively speaking, up to no good.”
The quintet were apprehended on a December 21 raid of the offices of SCIRI head Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, which begs the question of why one of Iraq’s most powerful Shia leaders is meeting with members of Iranian intelligence.
Found in posession of the intelligence agents included a strategy guide of sorts detailing Iranian support for both Shia and Sunni insurgency groups, including the Army of Ansar al-Sunnah and Al Qaida in Iraq. News that the five are Iranian intelligence officers makes sense, but that also makes it more disturbing what was inside the strategy document and gives it more credibility. Strange how that hasn’t received more press, no?

Intelligence officers. That’s interesting. I have read about Iranian fighters and also many Iranian documents in Iraq. I’m testing the Gravatar here.

The Gravatar show up in the post comments, but not in your sidebar comments. Not sure why that is.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that and I don’t know how to fix it. I upgraded the plugin for the ‘recent comments’ and that didn’t do it. I’ll have to look into the coding to find out what the deal is, and I have to fix the gravatar size or spacing between comments.
