U.S. soldiers detained six Iranian officials in northern Iraq, but the accounts given between Iran and the United States vary. The U.S. claims it was a simple knock on the door. Iran claims the U.S. broke the security gate down and stormed the building. The Iraanian account also states a Kurdish leader previously known to have aligned with the U.S. surrounded the U.S. forces and shots were fired, this while there were supposedly five helicopters hovering overhead that did nothing to avert the commander away from shooting at U.S. soldiers.
I don’t know the truth, but I don’t care either. These are people employed by the government of Iran who is responsible for the murder of U.S. soldiers in Iraq. And maybe if the U.S. holds them for over one year, it will be some payback for 1979.
In an earlier statement, the U.S. military said the individuals were “suspected of being closely tied to activities targeting Iraqi and coalition forces” and that their arrests came “without incident.”
“This operation is in support of the coalition’s effort to contribute to the maintenance of security and stability in Iraq,” the military said.
The Iraqi government awaited more information from the United States and Iran before issuing an official statement, spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said, but he confirmed six detentions.
Interesting note that regardless of how these six men were detained, they were targeted due to their alleged ties to “activities targeting Iraqi and coalition forces.”
