The purpose to pull American troops out of Baghdad and into the Northern region, causing turmoil, less troops in Baghdad to continue the BSP, bad press for the US, blah blah blah. This would go along with what you are reporting as many believe Sadr is supported by Iran. Sounds like a mess to me.
