There are two types of jihad; the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad.
The Greater Jihad (al-jihad al-akbar) is an inner struggle, often defined as a struggle against inner evils and towards the path closest to Allah.
The Lesser Jihad (al-jihad al-asghar) is the jihad of war, the same jihad Islamists announce repeatedly. It is often described as defensive even when it is completely offensive. The defensive aspects of the Lesser Jihad is called such because those who carry out the Lesser Jihad believe they are defending the lands of Allah from Infidels (ex. the Islamic Empire’s attack on Spain).
This video briefly shows the two types of jihad and those who are participating in both.
